Who they suit

A starter kit is the easiest way to begin, with no need to pick a nest, arena and accessories separately. Contents vary: some contain just a farm and arena, others add test tubes, a water feeder, escape barrier or even a colony.

How to choose

• Check which species the kit is designed for and whether the chamber size suits your ants.
• Find out what is included and what you will need to buy separately.
• Hardy species such as Messor, Lasius and tough Camponotus suit a first colony.
