Masters of disguise and ambush
A mantis waits motionless for hours, turning its head to follow prey before striking in a flash. Stick insects look so much like twigs that they are hard to spot even in a terrarium, and females of some species reproduce without males. Madagascar cockroaches hiss by forcing out air, and beetles amaze with their shapes and colours.
Before you buy
Needs vary widely: desert beetles need a dry terrarium, tropical stick insects a humid one with fresh cuttings of their food plants. Check the species, adult size, temperature, humidity, food and lifespan.
