Camponotus vicinus

A North American carpenter ant with three worker sizes. Confident foragers and a fast-growing colony.

Species at a glance

  • Origin: western North America, from southern Canada to northern Mexico
  • Size: queen 14–17 mm; workers 6–13 mm
  • Colony: up to 10,000 workers
  • Difficulty: suitable for beginners

Care conditions

  • Temperature: 20–28 °C with a 26–28 °C warm spot for the brood
  • Humidity: 50–70%
  • Food: sugars at all times (diluted honey, sugar syrup, pieces of fruit) and insects 2–3 times a week; water from a test tube or water feeder

Hibernation

Essential: 3–4 months at about 8 °C without food, roughly November to February.

Farm and colony growth

Majors have powerful mandibles and chew through flimsy barriers, so the farm must be sturdy. The queen founds the colony alone and does not eat until the first workers appear.
