Crematogaster biroi

A small arboreal acrobat ant from the forests of Southeast Asia, with several queens per colony.

Species at a glance

  • Origin: the warm, humid forests of Southeast Asia
  • Size: queen 5–7 mm; workers 2–3 mm
  • Colony: several queens; up to 1,000 workers
  • Difficulty: intermediate, for keepers with some experience

Care conditions

  • Temperature: 22–28 °C
  • Humidity: 60–80%
  • Food: small prey 2–3 times a week (fruit flies, minced mealworms) and liquid sugars; water at all times

Hibernation

Not needed: the colony stays active all year.

Farm and colony growth

It lives in dead wood and bark, so it readily moves into wood or cork nests. The tiny workers need flawless escape prevention.

Please note

Do not confuse it with Ooceraea biroi, an unrelated ant with a similar species name.
