Nature in miniature
A well-designed terrarium recreates the animal's home: hot sand and cool hides of the desert, or the damp moss and driftwood of a rainforest. In such a setting animals behave naturally, digging, hunting and basking, and are a pleasure to watch every day.
Bioactive terrarium
You can go further and create a living ecosystem with real plants, soil and a clean-up crew of isopods and springtails that recycle food scraps and waste. Such a terrarium needs cleaning less often and looks like a slice of the wild.
Three conditions to start with
- A heat gradient: a warm zone and a cooler one so the animal can choose where it feels best.
- Light: plus UV for basking reptiles.
- Humidity: dry for desert species, moist for tropical ones, monitored with a hygrometer.
