Colobopsis — door-head ants

Door-keeper ants: majors plug the nest entrance with their flat heads like a cork.

About the genus

Colobopsis are tree ants that live in hollow twigs. Majors have truncated flat heads that they use to block the nest entrance, letting only nestmates through. Colonies are usually small.

Care

  • Temperature: 24–28 °C all year, no hibernation.
  • Humidity: high in the nest, a drier arena.
  • Food: sugars (diluted honey, sugar syrup) at all times and small insects 2–3 times a week; remove leftovers within a day.
  • Farm: tube nests or wood with narrow entrances.
