Polyrhachis — spiny ants

Spiny ants with spines on the thorax and waist that often build nests from larval silk.

About the genus

Polyrhachis is a large Old World genus ranging from Africa to Australia. They are easy to recognise by the spines on their bodies. Many species live in trees and, like weaver ants, use larval silk to build nests.

Care

  • Temperature: 24–28 °C all year, no hibernation.
  • Humidity: high in the nest, a drier arena.
  • Food: sugars (diluted honey, sugar syrup) at all times and small insects 2–3 times a week; remove leftovers within a day.
  • Farm: the ants climb even glass, so reliable escape prevention is essential.
