Exotic invertebrates

Scorpions, tarantulas, millipedes, centipedes and isopods take up little space, live for years and amaze with their behaviour.

Why invertebrates are fascinating

Scorpions have existed for more than 400 million years and glow blue-green under an ultraviolet lamp. A moulting tarantula sheds its old skin in one piece and emerges bigger and brighter, and females of some species live 15–20 years or more. Isopods in a bioactive terrarium recycle waste and become a fascinating colony in their own right.

Why they are easy to keep

  • A terrarium takes up little space.
  • They rarely need feeding: adult scorpions and spiders eat every week or two.
  • They are quiet and odourless.

Where to start

Beginners do well with peaceful animals: isopods, millipedes and calm terrestrial tarantulas. Even calm tarantulas are not for handling: American species flick urticating hairs that irritate skin and eyes. Centipedes, plus scorpions and Asian or African tarantulas with potent venom, are for experienced keepers and need a lockable terrarium and long forceps. Before buying, check the temperature, humidity and terrarium type your species needs, and whether keeping it is legal in your country.
