Odontomachus — trap-jaw ants

Trap-jaw ants: mandibles open to 180° and snap shut in one of the fastest known movements in the animal kingdom.

About the genus

Odontomachus live in the tropics and warm temperate regions. The open mandibles lock and snap shut instantly when sensory hairs are touched, letting the ants catch prey, defend themselves and even jump by striking the ground.

Care

  • Food: mainly insects; sugar is optional.
  • Conditions: warmth and high humidity; hibernation needs depend on the species' origin.
  • Farm: reliable escape prevention, as the ants can jump.

Safety

Workers sting, and the sting is painful. Do not handle the ants, use long forceps, and if you are allergic to bee or wasp stings, choose another species.
