Odontoponera denticulata

A toothed ponerine from monsoon Asia: a day-active hunter with serrated mandibles that rarely takes sugar.

Species at a glance

  • Origin: hot, humid lowlands from the Indian subcontinent through the Malay Archipelago to northern Australia
  • Size: queen 11–13.5 mm; workers 9–11 mm
  • Colony: up to 3,000 workers
  • Difficulty: intermediate, for keepers with some experience

Care conditions

  • Temperature: 24–30 °C
  • Humidity: 60–80% in the nest
  • Food: insects 2–3 times a week; they rarely take sugar

Hibernation

Not needed: the colony stays active all year.

Farm and colony growth

The queen is semi-claustral: until the first workers appear she hunts herself, so she needs a small arena and small prey every 2–3 days. Workers are strong diggers.

Safety

Workers sting, and the sting is painful. Do not handle the ants, use long forceps, and if you are allergic to bee or wasp stings, choose another species.
