Crematogaster — acrobat ants

Acrobat ants raise their heart-shaped gaster over their back when they defend themselves.

About the genus

Crematogaster is a very large genus of small ants found worldwide. They are named for their habit of raising a heart-shaped gaster. They defend themselves mostly with chemicals rather than stings, and many species live in trees.

Care

  • Temperature: 24–28 °C all year, no hibernation.
  • Humidity: high in the nest, a drier arena.
  • Food: sugars (diluted honey, sugar syrup) at all times and small insects 2–3 times a week; remove leftovers within a day.
  • Farm: small workers squeeze through the tiniest gaps, so escape prevention must be flawless.
