Care and accessories

Looking after an ant farm takes a few minutes a week when you have the right small tools at hand.

What care involves

Ants clean their own nest and carry waste to the arena, so your job is small: keep an eye on water and humidity, feed on time and clear away leftovers. Handy tools let you do this quickly without disturbing the colony.

A weekly routine

  • Check the water and top up the feeder or moisten the nest if needed.
  • Give food and remove anything left from last time.
  • Glance at the thermometer: brood grows fastest when warm, but overheating is dangerous.
  • Renew the anti-escape coating on the arena walls if it has worn off.

What makes it easier

Long forceps let you add food and remove waste without touching the ants. A pipette moistens the nest precisely. Test tubes with cotton serve as spare housing for young colonies and a reliable water source. Heating with a thermometer keeps tropical species warm in winter, and an escape barrier keeps the ants in the arena.
