Novomessor cockerelli

A large desert ant from the south-western US and Mexico. It eats seeds and insects; the colony grows slowly at first.

Species at a glance

  • Origin: the deserts of the south-western US and northern Mexico
  • Size: queen 12–16 mm; workers about 8–10 mm
  • Colony: a mature colony has about 5,000 workers
  • Difficulty: intermediate, for keepers with some experience

Care conditions

  • Temperature: 25–30 °C with a gradient
  • Humidity: moderate in the nest, a dry arena
  • Food: insects, seeds and sugar water; keepers report that more protein speeds up colony growth

Hibernation

Sources differ, but given its desert origin a cool rest at about 15 °C from December to March with a gradual temperature drop is recommended.

Farm and colony growth

The queen founds the colony alone and needs no food until the first workers appear; a young colony lives in a test tube until it gets crowded.
