Description
A vivid formicarium engineered for a humid nest
ANTMART Flow Yellow 220×110, Variant B is an ant farm intended for humidity-loving tropical species. Its saturated yellow gloss and flowing, futuristic geometry follow the Flow (Smooth Biomorphism) design language, turning the colony into a striking interior feature. The appearance also serves a practical structure: the nest is configured for continuous, broadly distributed humidification.
The unit measures 220×110 mm. Its passage layout avoids dead-end areas, allowing ants to move easily between the chambers. Removable dividers split the nest into two independent sections. A young colony can begin in the smaller available area, with the second block opened as its population increases. This staged approach prevents a small colony from receiving more empty nesting space than it can occupy.
A full G-23 gypsum base
Variant B is distinguished by a 6 mm slab of dental-grade G-23 gypsum covering the entire floor of the residential zone. Moisture is therefore delivered through a continuous base rather than a small isolated insert. The large evaporation surface helps establish a more even humid background across the accessible chambers and reduces localized dry areas.
Dense G-23 gypsum is designed to withstand repeated contact with water. It retains its structure better than loose conventional gypsum and offers greater resistance to mechanical wear from ants. The slab and the actual moisture level still require supervision: appropriate humidification varies with the species, the colony’s stage of development, and the surrounding room conditions.
Materials selected for damp conditions
The body combines 3 mm yellow, white, and transparent acrylic with functional parts made from PETG. White nylon bolts secure the assembly. Unlike ordinary metal hardware, nylon does not rust in a persistently humid environment or leave corrosion marks on the yellow and light-colored surfaces. This inert fastening system is particularly relevant in a model where the entire gypsum floor is regularly supplied with moisture.
The material combination gives each component a clear purpose:
- transparent acrylic keeps the colony visible;
- glossy yellow acrylic defines the exterior design;
- PETG is used for functional construction elements;
- nylon fasteners resist corrosion in humid service;
- the continuous gypsum floor provides a broad evaporation area.
Arena and two-layer closure
The arena is 80 mm high and is covered by a double acrylic lid. Two acrylic layers add stiffness and reduce the likelihood of warping under the influence of humid air. Mechanical sliders hold the lid in its closed position and help prevent accidental displacement. A firmly secured closure is useful during routine care and when the formicarium must be transported carefully.
The mechanical system does not eliminate the need for inspection. Before introducing ants, after disassembly, and before transport, check the lid fit, sliders, dividers, and every joint. Whether an additional escape barrier is necessary depends on the ants’ size and behavior as well as the actual condition and fit of the assembled unit.
Species guidance
Variant B is intended for ants that require pronounced and stable nest humidity. The supplied recommendations include Pheidole, Carebara, tropical Camponotus, and ponerines such as Pachycondyla and Odontoponera. Its continuous gypsum base is especially relevant where localized drying around brood chambers is undesirable.
Requirements should always be checked for the exact species before introduction. Tropical ants do not all use the same moisture range, so inclusion in a recommended group is not a substitute for observing the colony and adjusting humidification in response to its behavior.
Important limitation for seed-storing ants
Flow Yellow Variant B is not intended for Messor, Pogonomyrmex, or other granivorous and dry-adapted ants that require a dry place for seed storage. Because gypsum covers the whole nest floor, moisture can influence every residential section. Grain reserves may become damp, germinate, or spoil under such conditions. Variant A, with partial gypsum humidification and a drier area, should be chosen for harvester ants and comparable species.
Questions and answers
1. Why is a continuous gypsum floor useful for Pheidole?
The G-23 slab extends across the entire residential floor and creates a large evaporation surface. This distributes moisture through the chambers more evenly than a small local insert. The arrangement matches the stated needs of humidity-loving Pheidole, including brood that is sensitive to drying.
2. Why are nylon bolts used instead of metal hardware?
Persistent humidity accelerates corrosion in ordinary metal. Nylon fasteners do not rust, produce orange stains on the yellow acrylic, or place metal components in direct contact with regularly moistened gypsum. Their white color also integrates with the lighter structural details.
3. Can the double lid be used without an additional escape barrier?
The paired acrylic layers and mechanical sliders provide the primary structural closure and help prevent accidental opening. Nevertheless, every seam should be checked before housing very small or highly active ants. Additional escape control should be selected according to the species and the observed fit of the farm.
4. How should the second nest section be introduced?
A removable divider separates the nest into two blocks. Start the colony with the smaller accessible section and open the next one only after its population has grown. Before moving the divider, prepare the unused chambers and ensure that the procedure cannot leave a temporary escape gap.
