Description
ANTMART Apex Black A is an elongated 220х110 mm ant farm built around a precise network of square passages. Its black PETG body and transparent acrylic components create a strong background for observation, while the narrow footprint makes practical use of desk space without eliminating a sectional living area.
A hybrid of humid and dry chambers
Variant A is a partially gypsum-lined formicarium. A 6 mm layer of high-strength G23 gypsum occupies only part of the passage system, leaving dry chambers beside the hydrated zone. This separation is particularly relevant to harvester ants: seed stores can be moved into the drier area, where they are less likely to germinate.
Partitions divide the living area into three independent sections. A young colony can begin with access to one zone, with the others opened as its population increases. Staged expansion prevents a small family from receiving the whole nest at once and makes unused chambers easier to manage.
The square Apex layout
Square passages use the elongated body efficiently and provide distinct chamber corners where ants may place food stores or waste. The straight-lined arrangement also makes activity within the nest easier to follow. This geometry is a functional feature of the Apex series as well as part of its visual character.
Clearance for larger ants
There is 15 mm of vertical space above the gypsum, while the dry sections reach a height of 21 mm. This layout accommodates species with larger queens and soldiers. Camponotus maculatus subnudus, Camponotus japonicus and Myrmicaria brunnea are among the examples mentioned in the source material.
PETG, acrylic and nylon hardware
The main body is made from PETG, with acrylic used for the transparent parts. Black nylon bolts hold the structure together. Unlike metal fasteners, they do not rust on contact with water or introduce metallic corrosion residue into the gypsum. Their color also integrates with the black body and preserves the farm’s consistent appearance.
Top-access arena
The 80 mm-high arena is fitted with a double acrylic top lid. Using two layers increases rigidity and reduces the risk of moisture-related deformation. Mechanical sliding locks hold the closure in position. After feeding, cleaning or other maintenance, the keeper should verify that every lock is engaged and that all lid components are seated correctly.
Colony compatibility
The source recommends this model for:
- Camponotus nicobarensis;
- Camponotus pseudoirritans;
- Camponotus fedtschenkoi.
Its combination of dry and hydrated chambers is also intended for colonies that benefit from varied moisture conditions, including harvester ants. The biology of the chosen species, colony size and required hydration regime should always be considered before introduction.
Questions and answers
What is the benefit of square passages?
They use the nesting area without rounded voids and form distinct corners in which ants can place stores or waste. Straight lines also make the chamber layout easier for the keeper to inspect.
Why are the bolts made from nylon?
Nylon hardware does not rust when exposed to water. This is useful beside damp gypsum and prevents visible residue from metal corrosion.
Can a small colony use the Apex 220х110 mm?
Yes. The three-part structure allows the keeper to provide access to only one section at first. Further sections can be opened when the growing colony needs additional room.
