Origin Black Full Gypsum: a spacious system for moisture-loving colonies

Variant B of the ANTMART Origin Black 200×200 mm ant farm is intended for species that require high, stable humidity inside the nesting area. Its defining feature is G-23 gypsum covering the entire footprint of the nest. The material stores water and helps maintain a humid microclimate without abrupt fluctuations.

The formicarium combines a four-section residential module with a tall outworld. This layout allows the keeper to introduce additional chambers as the colony expands instead of giving a small family unrestricted access to the whole nest from the beginning.

A full-area gypsum base

In this configuration, the gypsum layer extends throughout the living section. The substantial volume of porous material provides a large moisture reserve and adds inertia to the hydration system: once moistened, the gypsum releases water gradually. This arrangement is particularly relevant to tropical and other moisture-loving ants, as well as brood that is sensitive to drying.

A fully gypsum-lined nest is not a universal option for every species. For ants that favor drier conditions, including Messor harvester ants, the manufacturer recommends Variant A, which uses only partial gypsum coverage.

PETG structural components

The main components are made from PETG, a plastic selected for operation in a consistently humid environment. According to the manufacturer, the material is odorless, does not release styrene, and retains its shape under prolonged exposure to moisture. Foam plastic, wood, and PLA are not used in the residential module.

PETG suits the operating conditions of a full-gypsum farm because the body remains in contact with damp filling and needs to preserve its geometry. Black nylon bolts are used for assembly; unlike metal fasteners, these components do not rust.

Chamber height for larger ants

The usable space above the gypsum base is 15 mm high. The chambers are sized to accommodate workers as well as large queens and soldiers. This format is relevant to species with pronounced differences between castes and makes the Origin Black suitable for consideration with large Camponotus, including Camponotus japonicus.

Four stages of colony expansion

The nest is divided into four independent sections separated by removable partitions. Available living space can therefore be increased in a controlled sequence:

  • Only one section is opened for a young colony.
  • The next partition is removed when the family grows.
  • Further chambers are introduced after the colony has occupied its existing space.
  • The complete nest is opened for an established, populous colony.

Gradual expansion helps a small family maintain a compact occupied area and reduces the likelihood of unused chambers becoming refuse sites. The removable dividers fit closely against the body and are designed to restrict passage into sections that have not yet been opened.

An 80 mm outworld

The outworld is 80 mm high and is covered by a double acrylic lid. The two-layer construction is designed to maintain its shape in humid conditions while preserving access to the arena for feeding and routine colony care.

Species guidance

The full-gypsum configuration is primarily intended for moisture-loving ants. The source recommendations identify the following genera and species:

  • Pheidole;
  • Pachycondyla;
  • Odontoponera;
  • Carebara;
  • Camponotus nicobarensis;
  • Camponotus pseudoirritans;
  • Myrmicaria brunnea;
  • Camponotus maculatus subnudus;
  • Camponotus fedtschenkoi.

Selection should still take account of the requirements of the exact species, the current colony size, and its hydration needs. Inclusion in the compatibility list does not remove the need to monitor actual nest conditions.

Construction FAQ

How does Variant B differ from a partly gypsum-lined farm?

In Variant B, G-23 gypsum covers the entire residential area. The greater volume of gypsum stores more water and slows the loss of humidity. This configuration targets moisture-loving species, while Variant A is offered for ants requiring a drier nesting environment.

Why is PETG used for the body?

PETG provides a structural base intended for continuous contact with damp gypsum. The manufacturer states that it is odorless, does not release styrene, and resists moisture-related deformation. The construction does not rely on a foam-plastic core.

How is the size of the living area controlled?

Four sections are separated by removable dividers. The keeper opens them one at a time so the available volume follows the growth of the family. Their close fit is intended to keep ants out of sections that are not yet in service.
