Description

A black desert predator with a rapid defensive response

Hottentotta gentili is a large scorpion native to arid regions of North Africa, including Morocco and Algeria. Its deep coal-black coloration emphasizes a robust build, powerful pedipalps, and a thickened metasoma. Adults reach 7–9 cm. It is a striking collection species, but keeping it demands experience, disciplined procedures, and a secure enclosure prepared in advance.

Behavior and hazard level

Hottentotta gentili reacts quickly to disturbance and displays aggressive defensive behavior. It is often visible rather than constantly concealed, but this must not be mistaken for a calm temperament or tolerance of handling. When threatened, the scorpion actively uses its venomous sting.

This species is classified as a Hot-species. The source characterizes its venom as highly toxic with neurotoxic effects. All enclosure work must be performed without direct hand contact, using long forceps and a strict safety protocol. It should be kept only by adults who can prevent access by children and unauthorized people.

A dry desert setup

Use a secure enclosure with cross-flow ventilation; ANTMART Black and Yellow terrariums are listed as compatible options. The substrate may consist of clean quartz sand or sand mixed with a small amount of clay. It must remain dry.

Specified conditions:

  • daytime temperature: 30–34°C;
  • nighttime temperature: approximately 22–24°C;
  • humidity: 30–40%;
  • a small water dish refilled once a week.

The species’ desert origin calls for low humidity but does not eliminate the need for drinking water. Monitor temperature and humidity with measuring instruments instead of relying on visual or subjective assessment.

Before introduction

Check the lid locks, ventilation openings, and every possible escape gap. Plan feeding, cleaning, and maintenance so that hands never approach the animal. Hottentotta gentili is appropriate for a prepared keeper who understands the risks of working with a fast, venomous scorpion and can maintain consistent safety procedures.
