Description
Starter housing with automatic hydration and a separate feeding area
The Yellow mini module is intended as temporary accommodation for an ant queen or a small starter colony. One compact body combines a nesting chamber, a continuous gypsum base and a micro arena. The ants receive a sheltered living area, while the keeper has a separate space for introducing food and observing everyday activity.
This model is suited to the stage when a test tube has become inconvenient to service but the young family does not yet require a large formicarium. Its 50×180 mm dimensions provide distinct nesting and feeding zones without creating excessive unused space.
G23 gypsum with automatic hydration
The single chamber is built above a continuous 10 mm layer of G23 gypsum that covers the entire nesting area. The automatic hydration system supplies moisture through this gypsum base and assists its distribution within the nest. This arrangement is aimed at moisture-loving species that require a consistently humid living zone.
Automatic hydration reduces the need to access the chamber directly, but it does not make the enclosure maintenance-free. The water level must still be monitored and adjusted to suit the ants being kept. Excess moisture can cause mould to develop on gypsum, so the system should not be filled beyond the colony’s needs.
A dedicated micro arena
The integrated micro arena provides a working area for feeding. Grain, syrup or feeder insects can be placed there according to the diet of the particular colony. Since routine feeding takes place away from the nest, the queen and brood do not need to be disturbed each time food is added.
A separate arena also makes leftovers easier to inspect and remove promptly. This is useful for species that require regular feeding, although food type and portion size must always reflect colony numbers and species biology. The enclosure itself does not establish one universal feeding plan.
Clear viewing and solid construction
The main body is made from PETG plastic, while the transparent viewing section uses 3 mm acrylic. Metal bolts secure the principal components, and nylon fasteners are fitted around the arena. The available height above the gypsum is 15 mm; the section without gypsum has a height of 25 mm.
Special sliding catches secure the lid. They reduce the risk of accidental opening during care, carrying or an unintended rollover. Before transporting the colony, every catch and fastener should be inspected, and the formicarium should be stabilised inside suitable protective outer packaging.
A practical alternative to a starter tube
A test tube does not separate nesting and feeding areas: adding food or removing waste requires access to the same space occupied by the queen and brood. Damp cotton may become contaminated or mouldy over time, while changes in temperature can produce condensation on the glass. This mini module uses a different layout, combining solid gypsum for moisture management, a dedicated servicing arena and a secured lid.
The available space remains appropriate only for the early stage of colony development. Once the family grows, it should be transferred to a larger solid-gypsum or partial-gypsum formicarium chosen according to worker numbers, ant size and the requirements of the species.

Questions and answers
What does the automatic hydration system do?
It delivers moisture to the continuous G23 gypsum layer, through which water is distributed in the nesting area. The keeper must still monitor the supply and follow the humidity requirements of the species.
Is the module suitable for a first colony?
Yes. It is designed for temporary housing of a queen and a small starter family. The micro arena allows routine feeding without opening the ants’ living chamber every time.
Does gypsum eliminate mould?
No. Gypsum can also develop mould when repeatedly oversaturated. Moderate hydration, prompt removal of leftover food and regular inspection are still necessary.
Can the colony be transported in this enclosure?
The lid catches add security and reduce the chance of accidental opening. Before travel, all connections should be checked, the module should be kept stable and protective outer packaging should be used.
