Description

The single-chamber Black minimodule is a compact formicarium for the temporary housing of a queen and a young ant colony. It combines one living chamber backed by solid G23 gypsum with a separate micro-arena for food. Keeping these functions in different zones makes feeding, observation, and cleaning more manageable than performing the same tasks inside the confined space of a tube.

An organised starter habitat

In a tube incubator, the water reservoir, cotton, food, and colony occupy closely connected space. Temperature changes may produce condensation on the glass, damp cotton becomes soiled over time, and active workers can approach the opening during feeding. In this minimodule, the queen and brood remain in the nest chamber while food is introduced through the adjoining micro-arena.

The feeding area can be used for seeds, syrup, or feeder insects when these match the diet of the resident species. Food is easier to place and remove without opening the nest itself during every service. This division becomes particularly useful when the colony gains its first active workers.

Solid gypsum humidification

A continuous 10 mm layer of G23 gypsum lies beneath the living chamber. It absorbs added water and helps distribute moisture through the nest zone. The layout is intended for species that require humid conditions, including suitable forest and tropical ants.

A solid gypsum base does not remove the need for careful moisture control. Water demand varies with species, colony size, and surrounding conditions. Excessive watering may saturate the material and contribute to contamination or mould. Water should therefore be added gradually while the gypsum and the colony are observed.

Clear, secured construction

The body combines transparent 3 mm acrylic with impact-resistant PETG plastic. The clear surface provides a view of the queen, brood, and workers without requiring the enclosure to be dismantled. Metal bolts secure the main components, while nylon bolts are fitted around the micro-arena.

Mechanical slides secure the lid in its closed position. They reduce the chance of accidental opening while the module is serviced, tilted, or carried. Before moving it, check that all slides are fully engaged, the fasteners are secure, and the enclosure can remain stable throughout handling.

Care and future expansion

The minimodule is designed for the early stage of colony development. Its compact nest makes a small family easy to observe, while the micro-arena reserves a separate place for feeding. Liquid and protein food remains should be removed before they spoil, surfaces should be kept clean, and prolonged excess moisture should be avoided.

As worker numbers rise, the single chamber will eventually become too small. Transfer timing depends on the actual size of the colony and the space remaining rather than on a fixed schedule. The next formicarium should offer an appropriate volume and a humidification pattern suited to the species.

Questions and answers

How does the module differ from a tube?

It separates the living chamber from the micro-arena. Food can be handled outside the nesting zone, while a continuous layer of G23 gypsum provides the humidifying base.

Which ants suit the solid gypsum layout?

It is intended for ants that require a distinctly humid nest chamber. Husbandry requirements for the exact species should always be checked before the colony is introduced.

Does gypsum prevent mould?

No. Mould may still develop after overwatering, contamination, or food spoilage. Controlled humidification and timely cleaning remain necessary.

Can the occupied module be carried?

The lid slides help keep the cover closed, but their position and all fasteners must be checked first. Keep the enclosure stable and avoid unnecessary shaking while the queen and brood are inside.
