Description
The Black minimodule is a compact starter formicarium for a queen and a young ant colony. Instead of keeping feeding and nesting in the confined space of a tube, it combines two living chambers with a separate micro-arena. This gives the developing family additional room and makes routine feeding and observation more convenient. A continuous 10 mm layer of G23 gypsum extends beneath both chambers and supports moisture distribution through the living area.
A practical colony start
During the earliest stage, controlled humidification and access for feeding are especially important. In a glass tube, condensation may collect near the brood, damp cotton gradually becomes soiled, and active workers can approach the opening whenever food is introduced. The minimodule separates the nest from the feeding area, allowing everyday maintenance to be performed without directly opening the living chambers.
The integrated micro-arena can hold seeds, syrup, or feeder insects when these are appropriate for the species being kept. It becomes particularly useful after the first active workers appear. Food remains accessible for removal, while the queen and brood remain in the adjoining nest section.
Two chambers over solid gypsum
This version has two chambers positioned above one continuous gypsum fill. Compared with a single-chamber layout, it offers more space for a growing starter colony. G23 gypsum absorbs added water and spreads moisture through the residential zone, creating a humid section for ants whose husbandry requirements call for such conditions.
The fully gypsum-backed layout is intended primarily for moisture-loving forest and tropical species. Compatibility should still be checked for the exact species before use, since not every ant requires elevated humidity. Water must be added in controlled amounts. Persistent overwatering can saturate the material and may encourage mould even on a gypsum surface.
Body and fasteners
The enclosure combines transparent 3 mm acrylic with impact-resistant PETG plastic components. Its clear upper surface provides a view of the chambers, making it possible to monitor colony development without dismantling the unit. The main body is secured with metal bolts, while nylon bolts are used around the micro-arena.
Mechanical slides hold the lid in its closed position during care, handling, or an accidental tilt. Their position and the condition of every fastener should be checked before the module is moved. This is a temporary starter habitat rather than a permanent enclosure for a large family, so the colony should be transferred to a suitably sized formicarium as it develops.

Use and maintenance
The minimodule can serve as an intermediate home between the incubation stage and a full-size ant farm. Two chambers provide a useful reserve of space, but colony size, moisture, and arena cleanliness still need regular attention. Liquid and protein food should be removed before it spoils. Water should be introduced gradually while the condition of the gypsum and the needs of the resident species are monitored.
Questions and answers
Why use two chambers for a starter colony?
They give a developing family more living space. Both chambers are positioned over the continuous gypsum layer and form part of the humidified zone.
What is the advantage of the micro-arena?
Food is placed outside the nesting chambers. This simplifies feeding and cleaning while reducing the need to expose the living section each time the colony is serviced.
Can mould develop on the gypsum?
Yes. Gypsum does not prevent mould when the module is overwatered, contaminated, or left with spoiled food. Humidification should be matched to the species and adjusted according to observed conditions.
Can the module be transported?
The lid slides help keep the cover in place. Before moving the unit, check every slide and fastener and keep the enclosure in a stable position appropriate for the ants inside.
