Description
The Black mini module is a compact ant farm designed for the temporary housing of a queen or a young colony. It suits the early stage when the family does not yet require a large formicarium but already benefits from a separate feeding area, controlled hydration, and sections with different moisture levels. Its single spacious chamber, partial gypsum insert, and integrated micro-arena make routine care possible without repeatedly disturbing the main nesting space.
A practical starter habitat
A glass test tube is a simple incubator, but it also brings several limitations. Temperature changes may produce condensation, and excess water can reach the brood. Moist cotton gradually darkens and may develop mould under unsuitable conditions. Feeding is also awkward for species that need regular food because the narrow space must be opened close to the queen.
In this module, food can be placed in the dedicated micro-arena rather than inside the nesting section. This arrangement makes servicing easier and reduces direct interference with the colony. The gypsum still requires sensible care: repeated overfilling can create excessive dampness and may eventually cause mould. Hydration should therefore remain moderate, with the interior checked regularly.
One chamber with partial G23 gypsum
The living area consists of one chamber, and only half of it is covered with high-strength medical G23 gypsum. The gypsum layer is 10 mm thick. Once hydrated, this half provides the moister section, while the uncovered half remains drier. The colony can therefore choose between different conditions without leaving the shared chamber.
This division is particularly relevant to less moisture-dependent species, including the harvester ant Messor structor. Harvesters require a dry section for storing seeds, as uniformly damp conditions are unsuitable for their food reserves. At the same time, the gypsum section retains a humid area that can be used around the developing brood.
Automatic hydration in daily use
The automatic hydration system supplies moisture to the gypsum insert and helps maintain the transition between the moist and dry halves of the chamber. It reduces the need to wet the nesting surface directly during regular servicing. It does not remove the need for supervision: too much water can still make the module excessively damp. The system should be treated as a way to distribute moisture through the gypsum more evenly, not as permission to leave the habitat unchecked.
Materials and secure assembly
The body combines 3 mm transparent acrylic with black PETG plastic. The clear sections provide a view of the colony, while the black components give the Black model its characteristic construction. Metal bolts hold the layers together, and nylon components are used on the micro-arena.
Dedicated sliding catches secure the lid during maintenance, carrying, or an accidental overturn. They reduce the likelihood of the lid opening unexpectedly, but the catches should always be checked before the module is moved. Careful handling remains necessary during cleaning and transport.

Intended stage of colony growth
The mini module is intended primarily for queens and starter colonies. It can function as a self-contained small farm while the family gains workers and becomes established. Once the available space is no longer sufficient, the colony can be transferred to a larger gypsum or partially gypsum formicarium selected according to the needs of the species.
Questions and answers
Why does the gypsum cover only half the chamber?
Partial coverage creates two functional sections inside one chamber: a moister area for brood care and a drier area for cocoons or stored seeds. The entire nesting surface is not kept at the same moisture level.
Is the module suitable for steppe species?
The layout is intended in part for less moisture-dependent ants and harvesters, including Messor structor. Its uncovered section provides the dry space required for seed storage.
Can the automatic hydration system be left completely unattended?
No. It helps moisture pass through the gypsum, but the owner must still control the amount of water and inspect the chamber. Excess hydration can lead to persistent dampness and mould.
What keeps the lid closed while the module is carried?
Sliding catches hold the lid in position. Before cleaning or transport, check that each catch is fully engaged and handle the module carefully.
